INTRODUCTION

Development Studies is a multidisciplinary programme whose teaching, research and practice are continuously evolving in tandem with change processes in the society. Consequently, the relevance of the programme depends on the extent to which it reflects salient issues of development in the society.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  • To provide an understanding of the various intervention measures in solving social problems within societies.
  • To understand various methods and approaches used in social and community development
  • To enhance understanding of participatory skills in management of development projects.
  • To sensitize practitioners in development processes on strategies to influence change in the living conditions of communities.
  • Equip participants with relevant theoretical and practical knowledge on development issues.
  • Enable the participants apply concepts learned in class to analyse salient development issues in the society.
  • Inculcate in the participants appropriate development communication skills,values and attitudes for positively transforming the society.

Day 2: Economic Development

  • Theories of Economic Development: Rostow's Stages of Economic Growth, Structural Transformation
  • Economic Indicators and Measurement: GDP, GNI, HDI, Poverty Indices
  • Development Strategies:
  • Import Substitution Industrialization (ISI)
  • Export-led Growth
  • Sustainable Development
  • Role of International Financial Institutions: World Bank, IMF, WTO

Day 3: Social Development

  • Social Development Indicators: Education, Healthcare, Gender Equality, Social Inclusion
  • Theories of Social Development: Human Development Approach, Capability Approach
  • Social Policy and Welfare: Universal Basic Income, Social Protection Programs
  • Gender and Development: Women's Empowerment, Gender Mainstreaming, Feminist Perspectives

Day 4: Political Development

  • Theories of Political Development: Modernization Theory, Democratic Transition
  • Governance and Institutions: Rule of Law, Corruption, Good Governance
  • Civil Society and Development: NGOs, Social Movements, Participatory Development
  • Conflict and Development: Peacebuilding, Post-Conflict Reconstruction

Day 5: Sustainable Development

  • Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Overview and Progress
  • Environmental Sustainability: Climate Change Mitigation, Biodiversity Conservation, Sustainable Energy
  • Green Development: Sustainable Agriculture, Eco-tourism, Green Technologies
  • Urbanization and Sustainable Cities: Smart Cities, Sustainable Urban Planning

CERTIFICATION

  • Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be issued with Macskills Training and Development Institute Certificate
